Mosquito transmit Plasmodium while biting midges (Culicoides sp.) are responsible for Haemoproteus transmissions in birds.

3. Ancient Ant

A new genus of ants from the Cretaceous period has been found in Myanmar. The ants, named Linguamyrmex vladi, are distinguished by unusual horn-like appendages indicating specialised predatory behaviour not found in modern ants. The finding was reported in Systematic Entomology.

4. Robot with skin

In a breakthrough, University of Houston researchers developed artificial skin to help a robotic hand sense warmth and cold. This is the first time a semiconductor is created in a rubber composite and which remains functional even after the material is stretched up to 50% its original size.

5. Toughening Spider Silk

By itself, spider silk is a very strong material, tougher than steel of similar thickness. Now researchers have found a way to boost its strength further. They sprayed a solution of graphene and carbon nano tubes in the spider enclosures. The spiders ingested the solution and produced silk with enhanced toughness.

6. Elimination of Mother To Child Transmission (MTCT)

MTCT is the primary route of transmission of HIV among children. Babies are infected during Pregnancy, labour, delivery or while breastfeeding. Without any interventions, the risk of transmission is 20-45 %.

Earlier, Indian health providers offered 'single dose therapy', which involved administering the antiretroviral drug, nevirapine, to pregnant HIV - positive women two hours before delivery and to new borns within 72 hours of birth.

In 2014, the country adopted the World Health Organisation's recommendation "Multi-drug therapy", which is a combination of three drugs - tenofovir, lamivudine and efavirenz (TLE). Affected woman need to take it all their lives and nevirapine syrup for six week  only for their babies.

In 2015, Cuba became the first country in world to receive validation from WHO that it had eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis, followed by Thailand and Belarus.

7. What is the Black Planet?

Astronomers, using the Hubble space telescope, have discovered that an exoplanet - a planet that orbits a star other than the Sun- that is formally called WASP-12b reflects almost no light, making it appear essentially pitch black.

Since it's discovery in 2008, it has became one of the best studied exoplanets. With a radius almost twice that of Jupiter and a year of just over one earth day , WASP-12b is categorized as a hot Jupiter.
